Further Priorities
The following areas were identified as further priorities by the Advisory Group. The need for research in these areas could be considered at a further date and discussed with other funding bodies. Some work could probably be coordinated with existing research activity, in this programme or elsewhere.
  1. Delineation of predictors of response to the treatment of asthma in adults.
  2. Delineation of predictors for prognosis of wheezing illness in children and asthma.
  3. Evaluation of costs, risks and benefits of screening programmes for asthma in children and adults (including schools, workplace and primary care).
  4. Evaluation of the impact of use of guidelines on managing asthma.
  5. Evaluation of shared care schemes. *
  6. Level and causes of preventable admissions to hospital.
  7. Investigation of 'near deaths' for lessons in asthma management.
  8. Evaluation of the role of physiotherapists and community pharmacists.
  9. Evaluation of the role of community paediatrician in asthma management.
  10. Evaluation of specialist outreach clinics.*
  11. Evaluation of impact of fundholding on patterns of referral and care.
  12. Impact of asthma nurses on primary health care teams.*
  13. Evaluation of the role of asthma nurses in different settings. *
  14. Effectiveness of self-management plans drawn up with health care professionals for different levels of severity.
  15. Effectiveness of strategies to improve compliance.
  16. Evaluation of current practice for managing asthma in schools.
  17. Developing and evaluating interventions to improve management of asthma in schools.

* These topics may be covered by work in the top priority on, 'Evaluation of models of delivery of care for asthma management in different settings'
