Research objectives
This project aims to describe the natural history of the
development of asthma between birth and 22 years, and to identify factors predictive of
poor prognosis, particularly in relation to the development of asthma in adulthood. It
will build upon an existing longitudinal birth cohort study of 100 children born to atopic
parents that has already contributed substantially to the literature in this area. The
project will follow up this cohort at the age of 22 years so that information on current
clinical status, atopy, and lung function can be collected and analysed with respect to
earlier information collected between birth and 5 years, and at 11 years. This project
will help to give a clearer picture of how asthma and atopy develops through childhood and
into adulthood, and gives clues to what type of interventions may be successful in
preventing or delaying their development.
