Research objectives

A controlled case study to evaluate the effectiveness of a whole school approach to asthma management using a wide range of quantitative and qualitative techniques. The studies objectives are:

  • to offer intervention and support from a school nurse trained to help staff to develop a whole school approach to asthma management;
  • to monitor changes in school policy with respect to asthma management;
  • to monitor changes in staff attitudes, knowledge and awareness of asthma in childhood;
  • to monitor changes of all pupils with respect to their awareness, knowledge and understanding and perceptions of asthma, its causes and its management;
  • to monitor changes in morbidity, perceptions of asthma, self-esteem, knowledge and understanding of asthma in asthmatic children and the self esteem of asthmatic pupils.
