Research objectives

This project will identify beliefs and experiences associated with asthma and asthma therapy. In depth interviews of members of the Asian community, their families and key community figures will enable the researchers to explore the impact of religious and cultural beliefs on self-management of the disease, including attitudes to prescribed medication and utilisation of services. Preliminary interviews conducted by the applicants indicate that there are significant beliefs and practices associated with asthma management. While some are comparable with the majority White community, many are unique to South Asian cultures. A systematic exploration of these would provide a resource for health professionals working with these groups.
