Research objectives

A gulf exists between the prescriptions which doctors issue to their asthmatic patients and the treatments which are taken. The inability of doctors and patients to agree about management plans in 50% of cases leads to a great deal of avoidable morbidity and mortality. It is known that some of the discordance between doctors and patients is due to different beliefs about asthma management. This project is a qualitative study based on social learning theory in a clearly defined group of 48 young adult asthmatics across a range of disease severity.
