Research objectives
It has been demonstrated in non-asthma samples that patients have identifiable preferences regarding treatment decision-making roles and similarly that they have priorities regarding their information needs. The hypothesis of this study is that asthma patients will share these traits. Information has been suggested as being essential to patient participation in treatment decision-making. However, the nature of the relationship between information and desire for involvement in decision making is as yet under-researched and poorly understood. This study will explore the inter-relationship of these two factors. The study objectives will be:

  • To develop an instrument for identifying priority information needs and to validate a tool for exploring decisional role preference in a sample of asthma patients.
  • To identify preferred decisional roles and rationales for role preference in a sample of patients with asthma
  • To develop a profile of priority information needs from the sample
  • To explore the relationship between information and decisional role preference in the sample.
